Mom's Kitchen.

I'm going to Tennessee towards the end of June to visit my family. While I'm there my mom wants my sister and I to help design the kitchen and bath in the cottage she's building. I've been collecting pictures of rooms I think might fit her style. I'm hoping she'll stumble across something she loves, and we'll go from there. She wants some sort of darker wood, either in the flooring or cabinets...wants to keep it light and airy...and wants open shelving instead of upper cabinets...and would like to use beadboard somehow. Any ideas?

Love the open shelving. I would check out some flea markets & antique stores for old jelly cupboards to use instead of cabinets!

Kitchens are tough, because they tend to be the heart of the home. My kitchen has to be exactly what I want, because it's where I spend the most time! That being said, I'm a huge fan of islands and open shelving!

Love it! Sounds like she has kind of an updated farmhouse style. Chalkboard accents would be cute with all of that.

anything is possible with good, strong shelving beams. open shelves are my favorite. good luck helping your mom!

the pictures look good - you have the right idea with the white units, as that really helps create light and space. My kitchen has white units with a dark wood for the worktops, which looks great. It also has white tiles, and some of the areas are painted with an olive green, which goes really well with the white and the dark wood.
